Designing With Curves

“Pattern Telescoping” — © Judie Eatough

  1. Draw a curve. Use as many rows as you like.
  2. Enter it as threading and copy it for the treadling.
  3. Choose tieups that will reduce the curve to the number of profile blocks that you want.
  4. Fine tune the draft.

The Four Tieups

Tieup #1 — Telescope to 4 blocks Tieup #2 — Turned Twill for 8 blocks
Tieup 1: Telescope to 4 blocks Tieup 2: Turned Twill for 8 blocks
Tieup #3 — 3/3 Twill for 6 blocks Tieup #4 — Counterchanged for 4 blocks
Tieup 3: 3/3 Twill for 6 blocks Tieup 4: Counterchanged for 4 blocks

Curves

Designs using four curves (graphs are below) and the above tieups to experiment with designs.

Circle — Tieups #1, #2, #3, #4
Circle tieup 1 Circle tieup 2 Circle tieup 3 Circle tieup 4
Sin(x) — Tieups #1, #2, #3, #4
Sin(x) tieup 1 Sin(x) tieup 2 Sin(x) tieup 3 Sin(x) tieup 4
Lemniscate — Tieups #1, #2, #3, #4
Lemniscate tieup 1 Lemniscate tieup 2 Lemniscate tieup 3 Lemniscate tieup 4
x1/3 — Tieups #1, #2, #3, #4
x^(1/3) tieup 1 x^(1/3) tieup 2 x^(1/3) tieup 3 x^(1/3) tieup 4

Each curve has been reduced to a new curve that has the predetermined number of blocks (or fewer). After generating the new draft, new variations can be tried.
